
INTENTIONAL PARENTING IN COMMUNICATION
”The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out.” — Proverbs 20:5 (NIV)
Parenting is one of God’s greatest gifts and one of life’s most profound responsibilities. While parents often focus on providing food, shelter, education, and opportunities, one of the greatest needs of every child is often overlooked—the need to be truly heard, understood, and emotionally connected.
Intentional parenting is not accidental. It is a conscious commitment to raising children with purpose, wisdom, love, and consistency. At the center of intentional parenting is communication—not merely talking to our children, but understanding their hearts, discerning their emotions, and creating an environment where they feel safe enough to express themselves.
In a world where distractions compete for our attention and digital devices often replace face-to-face conversations, intentional communication has become more important than ever.
”Communication Is More Than Words”
Many parents believe communication simply means giving instructions, correcting behavior, or asking routine questions like, “How was school?” or “Have you eaten?” While these conversations are necessary, they are only the surface.
True communication reaches the heart.
God Himself demonstrates this throughout Scripture. He does not merely hear words; He sees the heart.
1 Samuel 16:7 reminds us:
”The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
As parents created in God’s image, we are called to cultivate this same sensitivity. Children may smile while carrying disappointment. They may laugh while struggling with loneliness. They may appear strong while quietly battling fear, anxiety, rejection, bullying, or insecurity.

Intentional parents learn to listen not only with their ears but also with their eyes, their hearts, and through the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
THE MINISTRY OF QUALITY TIME
”Quality communication cannot exist without quality time”
Relationships grow where time is intentionally invested. Children do not simply need parents who provide financially; they need parents who are emotionally available.
No meaningful communication happens without intentional time together.
Children spell love as T-I-M-E. They long for the presence of their parents more than expensive gifts. A busy schedule should never replace meaningful conversations.
One of God’s instructions to Israel reveals how intentional parenting should happen naturally throughout everyday life.
Deuteronomy 6:6–7 says:
”These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk by the way, and when thou lies down, and when thou rises up.
CLOSING CHARGE
Intentional parenting begins with intentional communication. Spend quality time with your children, look beyond their smiles, listen beyond their words, and connect with their hearts. When parents understand their children’s emotions, they are better positioned to guide them into God’s purpose and protect them from the pressures of the world
DECLARATIONS
1. I declare that I will be intentional in my communication with my children. I will not only hear their words but also discern their hearts. The Holy Spirit grants me sensitivity to read beyond every smile, every silence, and every emotion.
2. I declare that my home is a place of open, honest, and godly communication. My children will feel safe to express their thoughts, fears, questions, and dreams without fear of rejection or condemnation.
3. I declare that the Spirit of God gives me discernment to recognize every cry for help, every silent struggle, and every emotional need before it becomes a crisis. I will respond with wisdom, love, and the compassion of Christ, raising children who are emotionally whole and spiritually grounded.
