INTENTIONAL PARENTING
“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6
In a generation where many children are searching for identity, direction, and acceptance, God is calling parents to become intentional in raising their children according to His Word. Parenting is not merely providing food, shelter and education, it is purposefully nurturing a child spiritually, emotionally, mentally and morally.
1. EMOTIONAL CONNECTION
An intentional parent understands that correction is most effective when there is a strong emotional bond. “You cannot effectively correct a child you are not connected to”. Children are more likely to receive guidance from parents who understand their feelings and emotions.
2. PARENTS MUST BE VULNERABLE
Children connect better with parents who are genuine and approachable. Sharing experiences, challenges, and lessons learned helps build trust and creates a healthy relationship where children feel comfortable opening up.
3. CREATING A SAFE SPACE FOR COMMUNICATION
A child should feel secure enough to express thoughts, fears, mistakes, and concerns without fear of rejection.
How to Create a Safe Space:
★ Love your children for who they are, not merely for what they achieve.
★ Let them know that correction comes from a place of love.
★ Trust them and provide protection and guidance.
★ Avoid judgment and comparisons with other children.
★ Listen attentively and be slow to criticize or correct.
“Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.” James 1:19
4. Discernment in Parenting
Parenting requires spiritual sensitivity. Many battles children face are not visible to the natural eye.
Keys to Discernment:
★ Maintain a consistent prayer life for your children.
★ Depend on the Holy Spirit for revelation and guidance concerning their lives.
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” Romans 8:14
5. SENSITIVITY TO BODY LANGUAGE
An intentional parent must learn to read beyond words. Sometimes children communicate through their actions, attitudes, silence, and expressions. Parents should create open channels of communication and engage in meaningful conversations.
“A wise man will hear and increase learning.” Proverbs 1:5
6. LEADING YOUR CHILDREN TO SALVATION
One of the greatest responsibilities of a parent is to personally lead their children to Christ. Never assume they are saved simply because they attend church. Salvation must be a personal confession and commitment.
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” Romans 10:9
7. ESTABLISHING THEIR IDENTITY
Parents must help their children understand who they are in Christ. A child who knows their identity will not easily be swayed by worldly pressures and negative influences.
“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people.” 1 Peter 2:9

Intentional parenting is a divine assignment that requires love, prayer, patience, discernment, and spiritual leadership. As parents, we must intentionally nurture our children, create safe environments for growth, lead them to Christ and establish them in their God-given identity. When we do this faithfully, we raise a generation that will honor God, impact society and fulfill divine purpose.
